DreamHost Web Hosting Review

Web hosting has become incredibly affordable over the years and DreamHost is one of the those companies you can put in the budget or cheap category. Fortunately, the service isn’t cheaply ran because this web host is quite proficient at the technology behind this crazy business. These people also tend to be pretty responsive in terms of support.

After reading this review, you should be able to determine if DreamHost is able to meet your needs.

DreamHost Hosting Portfolio

DreamHost has a lot to offer and most of its packages are reasonably priced. Basic web hosting is available for as low as $5.95 a month - that’s if you sign up for 10 years of service. Who would wanna make that kind of commitment, right? I’d say you get the best value with the two-year plan which is available for $8.95 per month. While there are better bargains out there, this plan does come with a host of nice features. DreamHost also offers VPS hosting along with dedicated servers for those with more demanding needs. Domain names are available for $9.95 which is kind of pricey, especially if you’re familiar with GoDaddy

DreamHost Feature Set

There is much that needs to be considered when choosing a web host but taking a look at the feature set is never a bad idea. DreamHost gives you tons of bandwidth and disk storage, unlimited email accounts, a web-based mail solution and the SpamAssassin spam filter to help keep junk mail out your inbox. Your hosting account supports development tools like PHP and Ruby on Rails and comes included with unlimited MySQL databases and server-side includes. DreamHost provides its own control panel software which isn’t as comprehensive as other solutions. The interface is a bit clunky and lacks the user-friendliness of something like cPanel. Nevertheless, it gets the job done and pretty much lets you manage everything from email accounts to add-on domains.

DreamHost Reliability

Reliability is key with any web hosting company and DreamHost can be considered reliable. The web host utilizes high quality server hardware manufactured by leading brands like Intel and runs it operation out of a well maintained data center. The most impressive part of the DreamHost infrastructure is the fact that it is assisted by renewable energy credits, which helps DreamHost offset its carbon emissions. Although this web hosting company is trying to be more energy-efficient, using less hasn’t hindered its ability to deliver a reliable service.

DreamHost Technical Support and Customer Service

Support is very essential in the web hosting arena and my opinion, DreamHost could step it up in this department. The company doesn’t boast 24/7 support because that it is not. In fact, you only get up to three call backs a month, for an additional $9.95 mind you. That kinda sucks for real. Other means of support include email from which you can request a call back, a wiki (knowledgebase) and community forum.

DreamHost Overall Value

If you plan to create a simple yet professional website, DreamHost is the way to go. The price is competitive and the features are quite powerful. If you have more demanding needs or are bitchy about support, I say look elsewhere. Even though DreamHost offers dedicated servers, I recommend HostGator for that.
