Choosing & Registering with A WebHost

Assuming you’re ready to register your account with a web hosting company now, here’s a couple things that you need prior you can sign-up – a Paypal account with money or credit card and a valid e-mail address. I recommend Paypal as a payment because it is the most popular payment method that people use online. Most online retailers, blogshops, service providers accept Paypal. Your credit card or financial information won’t be exposed to the merchant too as Paypal protects the information as it acts as a middle-man in between you and the merchant.

After  you got Paypal setup get ready to sign-up with your chosen host. We’ll be using Asmallorange.com for this demonstration (Don’t worry the steps are identical for any other hosts).

Step 1

First is always to choose the plan you want. In this case we choose the ‘small’ plan from asmallorange.com

Step 2

After choosing your plan , they will ask you to give them the domain name of your website so that the server can identify your website and create an account to host it as illustrated below. There’s 2 steps to take note of here, first is you need to select the option ‘I want to ‘point’ my domain at you’ or something along the lines of ‘I will update my nameservers on an existing domain‘ if you’re using other hosts. Followed by entering your domain name in the box they provide (see 2.)

Step 3

Next , they’ll be asking you about your billing cycle. I’d personally go with 1 month but if you want a longer period that’s fine too. Most hosts gives additional discounts with a longer billing cycle and some throw in a free domain too.

Step 4

Now , they’ll be asking for your account details like your name , email , password etc. Just fill them up as you wish and at the end of it choose Paypal as the payment method (if you want to use another payment method please choose the one you prefer). Once you click proceed they will re-direct you to the payment gateway that you chose. Simply follow the gateway’s steps to make your payment and after payment is made most likely the website will re-direct you back to the host’s site with a confirmation page that they have received your payment. If you don’t see this , simply go back to the host’s site and login with your account you create with the details earlier.

Depending on the host, your hosting account might need to be manually approved but sometimes they could be automatically approved and ready for you to use. To check the status of your account simply go to ‘My services’ in your account manager menu :

Then you’ll get to see something like this , indicating your service’s status. It could either be ‘pending’ or ‘active’ . Once they’ve activated your account , you will immediately receive a welcome email from the host with login details to your hosting account or cPanel account. cPanel can also be accessed from the host menu by clicking on ‘view details’ illustrated below and then ‘Go to cPanel Login’.

Once you’re inside the cPanel menu , you will be presented with a screen like below. This is your hosting account’s menu where you can add files, make changes to your website and install a tonne of free scripts from. You can perform almost anything from here like adding more websites to your account, create e-mails, FTP accounts etc. You can read up on our individual posts on each function as i just want to point out the basics here.

Now that the hosting part of your website is ready, head over to the how to point your domain name to the web host to get your domain to corroborate with your host. If you have any questions , feel free to let me know on the contact page.
