How to Choose a Good Domain Name

Getting The Best Domain Name

The domain name is inarguably the most important element of your new website as it is what that defines your website’s nature and purpose to your visitors and the world. Whether you’re creating a website for your business or just building a personal site, getting a domain name that’s as closely related to your site’s nature or purpose is very important as your visitors will simply think of your site by it’s name. An example of it is webhostingblob.com , when you look at the domain name you would have guessed that this site’s about hosting a website since the name itself already implies it to you.

Put in time and effort when coming up with a domain name as a good foundation makes a great site in the future. What if your desired domain name is already registered by someone else? Well , if you’re committed or you want the name bad enough then i’d suggest you contacting the current owner of the domain and negotiate a deal to buy it over from him/her. You could get the current domain owner’s info through the web WHOIS . You could either e-mail the address provided there or contact them by phone if a phone number is listed. You should expect that they will probably want to sell if off to you at a higher price compared to the normal domain registration fees.

Long vs Short Domain Names

There’s been considerable debate around about this issue as a domain name can have up to 67 characters long on which is better. My personal experience is to get short to medium length names for my own sites. I usually do not go over 3 words in the domain name as my personal rule of thumb (note web hosting blob.com is a combination of 3 words which is just within my preference) .

If you are going for a long name like mypersonalgreatlovablestore.com then you might want to consider the fact that your visitors could mis-spelled it or having trouble memorizing it . On the other hand, short domain names are getting increasingly rare as more and more people registers their own website and thus shorter and dictionary word names gets taken up fast. So , getting a name that’s not too short or long would be just nice i guess – time to get crack’in on that name now i guess.

A Domain Name with Hyphens ?

Again in my personal opinion , don’t use hyphens due to the disadvantages below. I’ll also list down the advantages too for your comparison

Disadvantages – It’s easy for someone to forget the hyphen when they type out the domain name thus bringing them to an invalid website or another person/competitors webpage.

Hyphenated domains are commonly associated with spam websites. Don’t ask me why but i’s the perception that the internet has created towards them.

You could potentially have a disadvantage when you SEO (search engine optimization) your website due to the hyphens. Read more about this topic here

Advantages – The non-hyphenated domain might no longer be available thus the hyphens in the name would allow you to still get the name that you want.

Your domain could be better distinguished and looked nicer if you keep it short, example Ray-Ban.com would look better compared with Rayban.com . As this is very subjective to the website’s niche so i guess this wouldn’t be an advantage to many.

Domain Extensions – .COM . NET .ORG .INFO or others?

This is a rather common question that i’ve come across. Always go for the .COM as it’s the ideal choice for any website. If it’s not available then you could consider one of the other extensions (I personally recommend .NET as your second choice and .ORG as the third). Now , unless you are building an informative website I would recommend that you stay away from .INFOs as this domain extension was designed specifically for informative resources on the web. They are cheaper when it comes to domain registration and renewal fees but those few dollars of difference would not be worth it.

If you are planning to setup a website for your business then i’d strictly advice you to go for either a .COM or .NET or if you want to a localized domain name based on your country (.co.uk .com.my .com.sg etc) as these domain extensions cater and appeal better towards business based websites. The typical registration fee for .COMs .NETs and .ORGs range from $10.5 – $17 depending on which registrar you use while .INFOs go for $2-$3 a pop. Localized domain extensions would be based on your country of registration as most of the biggest domain registrars do not provide registration for localized extensions.

Finally, domain registration is the most important and the first step towards building your own website, therefore please take your time and creativity to come up with the best and available domain name for your website before you proceed any further. Building a good foundation (domain name) is a good start to having a great website.
