Different Types of Web Hosting

In case you’re wondering, there are a few types of web hosting available from commercial web hosting companies on the internet. They are namely shared web hosting, VPS hosting , reseller web hosting & dedicated servers. For most beginner webmasters to be , shared web hosting is recommended as it normally is the cheapest option available and is more than enough to host your first website. You can get hosting plans for shared hosting from anywhere around $1-$10 billed per month and just let the hosting company handle most of the backend server mambo-jambo stuff. Let’s just go into a short breakdown on the other types of hosing available just in case you’re curious about them :

VPS Hosting – It stands for Virtual Private server hosting. What it is , is actually a virtual (non-physical) server that you get from the hosting company. In a layman’s term , it is a breaking down of an actual physical server into many ‘virtual’ servers using virtualization software such as Zen, Openvz & KVM. It has everything an actual hosting server has , the OS the physical hardware & the software functions EXCEPT in actual reality the hardware resources are shared. This option is cheaper compared to an actual server thus it is favored by mid/advance level websites with a constant flow of traffic. If you want to know more about the VPS head over to VPS wikipedia

Reseller Web Hosting – This is something like multiple shared hosting accounts but instead of buying them for personal use to host sites, the person who buys this plan RE-SELLS each account to another buyer thus making a profit from each sale. It’s kinda a hosting company within a hosting company. They usually come with more resources offered than the standard shared hosting accounts as to cater for more websites to be hosted.

Dedicated Server – Ah yes , finally the high end stuff. This is buying of an actual server to host your website that only you own and that no one else do. Most of the time this would be an absolute overkill for any new webmaster as one dedicated server can literally host thousands of websites given ample amounts of hardware resources. Of course the larger websites on the internet do not only rely on 1 server but instead have their own server farms consisting of hundreds or thousands of servers to host and server millions of visitors everyday. Sites like Google , Yahoo or Microsoft have continental server data centers to keep their core websites running and to cater to visitors from different countries. This makes their site load fast and error free for each visitor. This option costs the most, usually in the hundreds of dollars for just one server each month and i would only recommend this option only if you have high traffic websites, or when you do :)

Now, obviously most of you would go for shared web hosting so i’ll get into more detail on this hosting type. The first and most important thing to consider is hosting company itself & it’s reputation. Why? Simply because if you choose a company with a bad record or reputation or has alot of complaints then you’re probably gonna have a bad time later dealing with website downtimes, server breakdowns or lag in your website loading speed etc. You also won’t want a host that could ‘vanish into thin air’ overnight as there’s a lot of these drive-by hosts nowadays. Below are a few hosts that i’m personally using or have used and of course they have my trust for their reputation :

The Web Hosting Companies

Asmallorange.com – This is one of the better hosts out there right now. For as low as $5 per month you can get a decent shared hosting account with more than enough resources to host several websites. The plan comes with 1GB storage for your files and 20GB bandwidth for visitors to load your websites. This in my opinion is the best plan for anyone new to creating their own websites. Heck, this very site is hosted with this hosting company too! Their support is great too as i’ve experienced quick and helpful replies to my inquiries and on top of that, i never noticed my websites going down before. This would definitely be my first choice when looking for a hosting company.

Hostgator.com – Another good choice to be considered. Hostgator is one of the best hosts out there with a five star support team they are known for. The unlimited resources on their Baby plan is well worth a look at but do note that it comes at a slightly higher price for the plan too. If you plan to build a lot of websites in the future , do give hostgator a try.

Bluehost.com – One of the larger hosting companies out there. I personally have not hosted with them before but from the countless reviews and good feedback i heard about them before this would be considerable as well. Noticed that they are direct competitors with hostgator so the plans they offer could look pretty similar but with a lower price!
